Self-care is about so much more than bubble baths and early nights. 💗
True wellbeing comes from looking after all parts of ourselves.
 
✨ The 8 Dimensions of Self-Care:
🧠 Emotional – understanding and expressing feelings in healthy ways
💪 Physical – sleep, movement, nutrition and rest
👭 Social – supportive friendships and connection
🕊️ Spiritual – meaning, purpose, values or faith
💷 Financial – reducing stress through budgeting and support
📚 Intellectual – learning, creativity and stimulating your mind
🏡 Environmental – creating safe, calming spaces around you
💼 Occupational – balance, purpose and wellbeing at work or volunteering
 
You do not need to perfect all 8 at once.
Sometimes self-care is simply asking yourself: 💭 “What part of me needs attention today?”

Emotional

Looking after emotional wellbeing can improve resilience, relationships, confidence and overall mental health. It also reminds us that all emotions are valid — not just the positive ones.

 Physical

Looking after physical health can improve energy levels, mood, concentration, sleep and long-term wellbeing. It can also help reduce the impact of stress on both the body and mind.

Physical self-care does not have to involve intense exercise or strict routines. Gentle movement, rest, fresh air, hydration and listening to your body are all important parts of caring for your physical health.

Social

Positive social connections can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, improve confidence, increase resilience and support emotional wellbeing. Social self-care is not about having lots of people around you — it is about having safe, supportive and meaningful connections.

Social self-care also includes recognising when relationships are draining or unhealthy and giving yourself permission to step back, set boundaries and protect your peace. Check out local groups and activities in your area.

Spiritual

Looking after spiritual wellbeing can help improve resilience, emotional balance, inner calm and overall wellbeing, particularly during times of stress, grief or uncertainty. Spiritual self-care can include quiet reflection, spending time outdoors, practising mindfulness, prayer, journalling, acts of kindness, or connecting with supportive communities.

Financial

Money worries can affect mental health, sleep, relationships and physical wellbeing, which is why financial self-care is an important part of overall wellbeing. Even small steps, such as reviewing bills, asking for support or creating a simple budget, can help improve confidence and reduce stress.

Financial self-care also means recognising that it is okay to ask for help. Support with budgeting, benefits, debt advice or cost-of-living pressures is available, and reaching out early can reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing.

Intellectual

Looking after intellectual wellbeing can improve confidence, concentration, memory, problem-solving skills and overall mental wellbeing. It can also help create a sense of achievement, purpose and personal growth throughout life.

Environmental

West Lothian has many local wellbeing spaces, outdoor areas and community projects that support environmental wellbeing through nature, movement, connection and community involvement. Spending time outdoors, taking mindful walks, gardening, joining local groups or simply taking notice of your surroundings can all positively impact mental health and wellbeing.

Occupational

Looking after occupational wellbeing can help reduce stress and burnout, improve confidence, increase motivation and support overall mental health. Occupational self-care also includes recognising when you need rest, flexibility or support, particularly during times of stress, illness, caring responsibilities or life changes.
